John Rodrigue – Breaking the Crown: Rebellion and the King’s Image in Early Stuart England

(October 19, 2015) John Rodrigue talks about the images of kingship and the resistance to it, as these things played out in literature, drama, and polemic. Most specifically, on the “image wars” between the King and his opposition as they wrestled for the hearts and minds of the people — a struggle Charles I seemed to have lost when he lost his head, but that monarchy ultimately won. Historically, the “image wars” were one of the first PR battles to take place in Europe, and certainly in England, after 100 or more years of the printing press. John Rodrigue is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Arts, Languages, and Literature Department at AUBG.

Rosen Plevneliev – A Better Future: Who Needs to Take the Initiative?

(November 13, 2013) President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Rosen Plevneliev, visited the American University in Bulgaria to meet with students and to deliver a talk on the issues Bulgaria is currently facing. President Plevneliev talked about the dependency of the government on oligarchic structures, the ineffective judiciary system, the under-performing economy, the lack of government transparency, and the poor quality of healthcare. However, the President finished on an optimistic note, remarking that the future is bright and that “every one of us matters in our journey towards the European democracy and prosperity.”

Andras Bozoki – The Elitist-Populist Pendulum

(September 9, 2013) Professor Andras Bozoki is Professor of Political Science at the Central European University and has been Hungary’s Minister of Culture during 2005-2006. In his first visit to AUBG, Professor Bozoki talks about the concepts of populism and elitism, which he describes as twins that provoke the existence of each other and are indelible elements of every democracy. (March 28, 2012) Well-known Greek political theorist Yannis Stavrakakis discusses the two spirits of capitalism in a psychological analysis of the different socioeconomic approaches. Professor Stavrakakis also talks about the European crisis and answers questions from the audience. Dr. Yannis Stavrakakis is mainly known for his explorations of the importance of psychoanalytic theory for contemporary political and cultural analysis and currently serves as Associate Professor at the School of Political Sciences of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
