(September 17, 2013) Elizabeth Crighton, Professor of Government and Politics at Pomona College, talks about the failure of the revolutions across the Middle East and North Africa to deliver on their promises. Dr. Crighton outlined three chief reasons for the failure of the Arab Spring – the new governments’ “substantial lack of political capacity”, the military obstacle in front of democracy, and the largely fragmented opposition groups in Egypt, Syria, Libya, and the other countries in the MENA region.

Rosen Plevneliev – A Better Future: Who Needs to Take the Initiative?

(November 13, 2013) President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Rosen Plevneliev, visited the American University in Bulgaria to meet with students and to deliver a talk on the issues Bulgaria is currently facing. President Plevneliev talked about the dependency of the government on oligarchic structures, the ineffective judiciary system, the under-performing economy, the lack of government transparency, and the poor quality of healthcare. However, the President finished on an optimistic note, remarking that the future is bright and that “every one of us matters in our journey towards the European democracy and prosperity.”

(October 15, 2012) 100 years after the beginning of the Balkan Wars, Professor Rositsa Gradeva talks about their political and economic consequences for Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia, and other affected nations. Professor Gradeva goes through the causes for the two wars and concludes with an analysis of the contemporary effect the wars had. Professor Rositsa Gradeva is an Associate Professor of History at the American University in Bulgaria. Her research interests are centered on Ottoman and Balkan history and she teaches courses on these topics at AUBG.

Brian Farrell – The Role of International Justice in Securing Peace

(January 22, 2013) University of Iowa Law Professor Brian Farrell visited AUBG and gave a talk on the role of international law in securing peace and human rights, especially in the aftermath of World War II. Farrell presents his thoughts on the ICC and proposes new approaches to international law. Professor Farrell is Director of Academic Achievement and Adjunct Lecturer in Law and International Studies at The College of Law at the University of Iowa and has also conducted human rights field research in the Middle East. Professor Farrell is currently teaching at Sofia University as a Fulbright Scholar and is giving lectures around Bulgaria.
